Rodwald and Novotna claim the European Freestyle titles in the 3rd day of the Kitesurf Tour Europe in Italy

The previous nights festivities may have had an impact on the performance of many today as one of the biggest parties in Southern Italy was held at Hang Loose beach with over 2000 people present.

But today was race day and it was time for competitors to focus mind and body on the challenges ahead.

The Course racing division was first to hit the water and the wind caught everyone out with the majority of the fleet being overpowered by the big kites as the breeze reached over 18 knots. Taking advantage of this was Italian Ricardo Leccese who scored his first bullet and gained a clear lead over Germany’s Gruber. Despite not finishing his first race, Bridge came back strong in the second and secured another bullet that kept him in the lead.

With the wind blowing hard there was no time to waste and the Freestyle competition quickly got underway. The double elimination round would give the riders a second chance to claim the European title and with today’s gusty weather it wasn’t an easy task. Crashes and tight battles were on the menu today.. In the womens race it was once again a final between Czech Rupublic’s Novotna and local rider Bagnoli. Novotna proved her superiority and defended her European title, easily winning today’s heat.

In the mens race things were not so easy for Italian Coccoluto, as defending European Champion Rodwald from Germany came back hard today won the second elimination round giving him a second shot at the title in a super final that followed. As predicted in the womens final Mario Rodwald was crowned European Champion for another year.

Races continued for twin tip and Course racing divisions right after the freestyle finals concluding a full days racing here in Gizzeria at Hang Loose Beach. The Finals for these two divisions will take place tomorrow so stay tuned to find out the winners!
